Understanding the UPSC Civil Services Examination
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE), one of the most competitive exams in India. This examination serves as the gateway to various prestigious government services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and others.
Exam Structure
The UPSC CSE is conducted in three stages:
- Preliminary Examination (Prelims): This is a screening test consisting of two objective-type papers: General Studies Paper-I and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) Paper-II. The marks obtained in CSAT are qualifying in nature, while the marks obtained in General Studies Paper-I are used to determine eligibility for the Main Examination.
- Main Examination (Mains): This is a written examination consisting of nine papers. Two papers are qualifying (English and an Indian Language), and the marks obtained in the remaining seven papers are counted for final ranking. These papers include Essay, General Studies (four papers), and Optional Subject (two papers).
- Interview (Personality Test): Candidates who qualify in the Main Examination are called for an interview. This stage assesses the candidate's personality, general awareness, and suitability for the civil services.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the UPSC CSE, candidates must meet the following criteria:
